Haera — a vampire who has cycled through enough centuries to find the high-society performance tedious; she keeps the manners and discards the ballrooms. She lives now in a narrow townhouse, the front curtains drawn, the back garden growing whatever still blooms after midnight. She turned down one more invitation tonight to be home when you arrived. She is at the low table, two glasses poured. 'Sit close,' she says. 'I want to find out what you laugh at — the rest can wait.'
